ABOUT NATURAL NUTRITION

Background and mission.

Back in 2004, I was browsing through some books on a market stall in Honiton, Devon, when I came across and purchased a beautiful book called 'Miracle Soups' by Amanda Cross .Not only were the recipes simple and tasty, but there were also some really interesting nutritional notes accompanying each one, as well as two charts at the beginning of the book, one about the nutritional value of a number of foods, and another, an ailment chart. My interest had been ignited.

I took one of the soups, ( lentil and cumin) to my dad in 2006 when he was in hospital and not able to eat very much. I remember how much he enjoyed it . I wish that I had known much more about the possibilities of nutritional therapy back then, and in the lead-up to him being admitted to hospital for treatment of his myeloma, and death a short time later from pneumonia whilst still there. It's hard not to believe that the outcome could have been so different.

In 2017, I won a scholarship with The Health Sciences Academy to study Nutritional Therapy. I studied intensely and graduated in autumn 2018 with a Professional Diploma Level 5 . A year later, I invested further in more courses from the academy, as I discovered that there was so much to learn. I have now completed a mini course specialising in Gastro Intestinal Disorders and Gut Repair, and , most recently have become an Advanced Dietary Supplements Advisor with a second Professional Diploma Level 5.

My aim is to try to help as many people as possible to achieve optimum health through nutrition. 'Hidden hunger' is a huge problem in today's society, affecting not only lower income people, but the wealthy too. As around only 5-6% of the world's chronic disease is caused by genetics, that leaves around 95% that may be preventable.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

' Very helpful, surprisingly interesting. I have applied Jacqueline's suggestions and have noticed significant improvement of my symptoms...'

Andrew P Marshall 2018

Testimonial for Jacqueline Bourne 26/08/20

I suffer from fibromyalgia, hypo thyroidism, irritable bowl syndrome, asthma and allergies. I was first diagnosed with hypo thyroidism in 2006, and fibromyalgia in 2008. I have had asthma and allergies to mould, mildew, fungus spores, pollen etc since childhood.

Background
During 2006 I noticed I was becoming increasingly tired for no apparent reason, so consulted a doctor. A blood test showed I had an underactive thyroid gland and I was prescribed thyroxin. Once the levels were stabilized, this was monitored at six monthly – yearly intervals. However, in the period leading up to 2008, I started to experience bouts of extreme fatigue and painful joints and muscles. The pain could shift around my body too: there seemed to be no rhyme or reason for it.
During 2006 -2008, I was still working full time. I used to cycle to work and back, (10 miles a day) I attended karate classes 2 or 3 times a week. I led an active life. However, gradually I had to travel to work by car, I had to give up karate. Where I had been active at weekends, going for days out etc, I had to stay at home and go to bed. For most of these 2 years my life became a cycle of going to work, go home, eat, then go to bed: until I finally collapsed. After a consultation with a rheumatologist, I was taken into hospital for a week of tests. All which showed to be negative. After they ruled things out, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
Symptoms
The symptoms I demonstrated are as follows:
Chronic and severe pain and fatigue, sleep disturbance, restless legs, problems with walking, problems with mental processing: struggling to find words etc. also known as “brain fog, fibro fog”. Feelings of frustration, anger, helplessness, low self-esteem, “distant”.
Prior to first consultation with Jacqueline 2018
By 2018, I had long since stopped working. I had been living a largely sedate life, which had helped to a point, but I was still taking a lot of prescribed medication including tramadol, diazepam, pregabalin. The medication helped with the pain, but over the years, I had been taking higher doses. This led to me feeling like a zombie. Quality of life was poor. Things had to change. Quality of life had to improve.
Before I had my first consultation with Jacqueline, I had already made my mind up to stop some of the medication. It was making me feel even more “distant” than the fibromyalgia was. First to go was tramadol. It took a great deal of will power and 3 months of gradually reducing the dose, but I did it. The pain was still there, but I felt a bit more “with it”.

First consultation with Jacqueline
We talked about nutrition. A lot! We went through what I was eating and when I ate it. I remember two things came to light immediately: sugar and carbohydrates. I like sweet things. I also like bread, potatoes, pizza and pasta. Jacqueline pointed out that these things can act as triggers for fibromyalgia, increasing levels of pain and fatigue. So, sugary cereals were swapped for porridge, sandwiches and crisps for (surprisingly nice) salads, pasta and pizza for stir fry, chilli, stews.  Another guilty party was caffeine. Being tired all the time you think coffee will help! It turns out to be another trigger. A top tip was to avoid processed food as much as possible.
Jacqueline also explained what types of vitamins and minerals I was deficient in and suggested what kind of foods I should be eating, how much and what health benefits those foods may have.
We also talked about setting regular times to eat, sleep and wake up.
Grudgingly, I took this on board and decided to give it a go.
For the first three months, it was suggested I keep a diary, documenting which food and drink I consumed and if my symptoms and mood improved. This really helped with finding what foods / drinks had a negative effect on me: sure enough, the ones pointed out in the consultation were amongst them.

2018 – 2020
Since my first consultation with Jacqueline and implementing (most of the time) the plan she laid out for me, my overall health has improved noticeably. I have gone from having to sleep during the day to being able to stay awake. I am also more lucid for longer periods. I have only had to take diazepam and / or pregabalin very occasionally, when I get flare ups – which still happen at irregular intervals. However, I am feeling more in control of the pain and fatigue, more of the time. I can now undertake tasks such as housework, cooking and light gardening duties without feeling totally wiped out. Learning to pace myself has also been an important factor. I feel better about myself, as I am able to contribute more.  My sleep patterns are still poor a lot of the time, but there has been a slight improvement there: I now get some nights where I sleep better. Getting up is also difficult, but this is still a work in progress!
